Machu Pichu
Have you ever heard of a town called Aguas Calientes? It is a very small town on the floor of the valley below Machu Picchu, the "lost city of the Incas." It is also the home of the Majestic, a zero star hotel where we stayed during our visit. In retrospect, this is funny ... the hotel had a corrugated tin roof. During the night, it rained really hard and it sounded like we were sleeping inside a drum. It seemed less funny at the time.
We arrived by train in Aguas Calientes around noon, had lunch in a local restaurant, and took the bus about 6 miles and 1,000 vertical feet to the ruins of Machu Picchu. We spent the afternoon touring the lost city. We came here with sky high expectations and the site exceeded even these. The city has been mostly restored except for the thatch roofs that would have covered the buildings. It is very clean. There weren't that many people there. And we had the run of the place. At dusk we returned to our hotel and dinner.
Next day we awoke very early to driving rain. After the Majestic's idea of breakfast (coffee) we reasoned that Machu Picchu might be above the clouds and again took the bus to the lost city. By the time we arrived, the rain had stopped and the clouds were beginning to lift. We enjoyed hiking part of the Inca Trail in the improving weather. What a spectacular place!
