Cancun
In early May, 2010, we took a much needed vacation. We needed to sooth the stress of selling a house, moving. a new grand child, and new challenges at work. Our grand plan was to go diving in Cancun. We've dived Cozumel and liked it. Why not try the diving on the other side of the straight?
When we arrived, we discovered why not to dive there ... 25-30 knot winds. All the beaches were red-flagged with 8-10 foot surfs. The seas were ridiculous. We never entered saltwater. We got caught up on our reading. Enjoyed the people, the food, and the sites. We drank our quarterly quota of Mojitos and Margaritas.
And we rented a car and visited ruins in Yucatan and Quintana Roo. Driving here is easy. Easy to rent a car. Good roads. Expensive gas. Mostly difficult to get well and truly lost. And we learned a new Spanish word - Tope. Seemingly randomly along the highways the government has installed big, hard, suspension dragging speed bumps to control the speed of traffic. You'd see a traditional speed bump sign - and have to stand on the brakes to be sure you didn't destroy the car as you crossed them. 100 km/h - 5 km/h as fast as your brakes would perform ... then back to 100. It's not like they were located at busy intersections, or schools, or hospitals, or parks - like I said - Random. Sheesh!
The vacation wasn't a total bust, but it wasn't what we expected ... less, and more.
