Salamanca
Two and a half hours west of Madrid by car, almost in Portugal, Salamanca is one of Spain's oldest cities. It was founded an an Iberian settlement in pre-Roman times and conquered by Hannibal in 217 BC. The university here is one of the oldest and most distinguished in Europe. It was founded in the 13th century and continues in operation today. It has a youthful and untouristy atmosphere.
