Bullfighting
I first attended the bullfights in Madrid in 1996. It was a hot summer day. I had just flown in from the US and unexpectedly met some acquaintances in the lobby of the hotel. They had a spare ticket. Of course all my stereotypical images of bullfighting were wrong. It is not a sport. It is a spectacle. In fact it is the ritualized execution of a bull. Moreover, as American baseball has innings, the bullfights have 6 bulls, one after the other. Still, I was excited to witness it and horrified by what I saw.
Fast forward to June 2001. As I approached the Plaza de Toros, I remembered back to 1996. I felt the excitement from those days and wondered if I would again be disgusted by the outcome. This time, I was able to broaden my inspection of the cultural event. Like American baseball, I was able to follow the main event and at the same time appreciate what was going on in the crowd. Knowing the outcome in advance, I was able to distance myself from it. My emotions in 1996 were "bi-modal" ... horror and excitement. This time, I think they remain bi-modal but both emotions have moved further out towards the end of the spectrum.
Bullfighting is controversial in Spain at the moment. There is a vigorous movement to ban the spectacle. Today, instead of feeding the poor, the carcasses are burned due to fear of Mad Cow Disease. I am sure this will be the last century in which bullfighting occurs ... I suspect it may be the last decade.
Do Not Adjust Your Set: These pictures were taken in between 1997 and 1999 with a first generation digital camera. They are as big and as good as they'll ever get.
