Craigiever
If Crathes was my favorite castle, Craigievar was my second favorite. As we arrived we could hear tremendous explosions. On investigation, there was an historic regiment of Covenanters demonstrating old match lock and flint lock rifles on the lawn in front of the castle. This is a group of modern Scots who dress in period costumes and carry period weapons to keep alive some of the history of Scotland. and they can trace themselves back to the Covenanters whose graveyard we saw in Edinburgh.
Talking with one of them, he said that the weapons weren't really much good in a battle. Too inaccurate and too slow to reload. Mostly, he said, the soldiers would grab them by the barrel and use them as a club. No smart weapons in the 1700's. It was an interesting stop and a pleasant conversation.
Next stop, our hotel for the night, Bunchrew House.
