Cotswolds 2001
The Cotswolds is an area in England, west of Oxford and north of Bath, that time forgot. In Medieval times, it was rich and prosperous due to the wool industry. When the industry collapsed, it became so poor and so depressed it was literally ignored for centuries. Today, its pristine nature and combination of well preserved villages and graceful English countryside have lead to an increase in popularity and prosperity.
This is walking country and the right to walk anywhere is enforced by the annual Rambling Society's "Mass Trespass." Every one the the country's 50,000 miles of foot paths are walked. Any path that is blocked is unceremoniously "unblocked."
These pictures were taken in July 2001, unfortunately a time of Foot & Mouth disease in England, and walking in the countryside is, at least temporarily, discouraged. Walking across a simple field now requires rigorous adherence to the rules which may prevent the spread of the virus causing the disease. As a result, tourism is down which depresses the crowds that might spoil the experience. We enjoyed ourselves immensely.
Below are pictures of two locations: Stow On The Wold; and Lower Slaughter
