Bath 2000

In August, 2000 during a business trip to London, we made a side trip to visit friends in Bristol. Together, we spent a lovely late summer day in Bath, 15 minutes by car from Bristol. Bath was the site of a hot spring, discovered and exploited by the Romans as a spa. It stands today and has been restored. And while the Baths and Spa might be a reason to visit, Bath is also the site of an unexpected treasure ... the Cathedral of Bath.

These were taken in August 2000 with a primitive Olympus digital camera.

Bath is a clean, well kept town. People take obvious pride in the impression it makes on visitors. Even on this gray day, it is inviting.
The Baths of Bath have been restored. The art, architecture and function of the place is interesting. Here a restored sculpture of s sun god.
One of the things that makes travel interesting is the connections you make. This mosaic on the floor of the baths is remarkably similar to the mosaics we've seen Volubilis in Morocco. Not surprising, really, considering the Romans built both.
For me, the real treasure of Bath is the Cathedral.
Due to the massive windows which face west, the interior of the Cathedral is light and open-feeling.

While we were there, the organ was silent, so we don't know what it sounds like. But it is one of the most visually beautiful organs I've seen in any Cathedral anywhere in the world. The detailed beauty of the organ is set against the intricate detail of the columns and roof.
Along the walls of the Cathedral are the head stones of past parishioners. It is interesting to read these to get a little insight to the England of the past.
