St Petersburg - Winter Palace
A recent (2012) trip to the Baltics included stops in Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Germany, Helsinki, St. Petersburg, Estonia, and Stockholm.
Here's St Perersburg's Winter Palace - one of the highlights of the trip. This is the third generation of Winter palaces to sit on this spot. It was built between 1754 and 1762 for Tsarina Elizabeth and is considered to be a fine example of Russian Baroque architecture. It burned in 1837 and in 1917 it was a Regional Military Headquarters - which explains why it was stormed by the Bolsheviks,
