Xi'an
We took an overnight train from Beijing to Xi'an. Xi'an was once the largest city in the world (during the Tang Dynasty between the 7th and 10th centuries). It is still an intellectual and cultural canter.
When you travel, you get exposed to new germs. Early in our trip, I was exposed to someone with a cold and by now I had one and it was fully developed. Because of that I slept poorly on the train; but otherwise this turned out to be a great way to travel. We occupied a sleeping compartment with 4 fold down beds. If your mental model is a couchette on a European train, you've got it exactly right. Western style restroom at the right end of the car. Chinese style one to the left. We remembered to ALWAYS turn right! We arrived the following morning and checked into our hotel, the Xian Garden Hotel, billed as the "First 'Tang' Culture Style Hotel of China." Then we set off to see what we would see.
Xi'an made a very good impression on me. This would be a more livable city to my way of thinking than Shanghai or Beijing.
These photos were taken in October 2005, mostly with a Nikon D70.
