Beijing
We flew Shanghai Airlines from Shanghai to Beijing. I naively feared we would be on a plane of the same vintage as the one Indiana Jones flew in Raiders of the Lost Ark. I received another cultural whack on the side of the head when it turned out to be a modern Boeing jet. The 2 hour flight was uneventful and we arrived in time to check in to the Ning Xia Hotel as darkness fell. The hotel proved to be a hidden jewel. It was down a narrow dingy alley off a modest street. Just around the corner was an internet cafe. And just at the end of the alley there were several good restaurants. A stone's throw away was the Confucius Temple, the largest in China outside the one at his birthplace in Qufu.
Beijing, a modern city of around 14 million people, has been the off-again-on-again capital of Imperial China since the Mongol Yuan dynasty (13th century). It is home to the Forbidden City, Tian'an Men Square and is a convenient jumping off place to visit the Great Wall of China. All these and a few more were in our crosshairs as we began our visit.
These photos were taken in October 2005 mostly with a Nikon D70.
