Elephant Island
The Drake Passage is the body of water between the tip of Argentina and the Antarctic Peninsula. To reach the Antarctic, we needed to cross it and the crossing was two days of lively seas. (More on that later). After our crossing, I was delighted to see land and calm seas. Our first landfall was Elephant Island. Those of you familiar with the story of Shackleton's 1915 attempt to cross the Antarctic Continent will remember this is where he left his men from the Endurance while he set out in a small boat in search of rescue. They survived 5 months over winter and were rescued in August 1916. Elephant Island has been described as a small Godforsaken island of rock and ice with a few penguins and seals for food. Seeing it, it is truly amazing to me the 22 men survived. There is a small monument to their survival on a spit of land reaching out from the island.
Viewed from the comfort of our ship, where we simply walked to the dining room to eat a great meal, and toured the bay in Zodiacs ... it had a rugged beauty that was completely unlike any experience I've had in life.
