These pictures were taken in Pilensberg Game Reserve is near Johannesburg South Africa. In many respects, it is similar to its better know sister, Kruger National Park. About an hour from the city, Pilensberg is more accessible than Kruger. Smaller than Kruger, it is more manageable for a visitor. And it has the advantage of being Malaria free

Do Not Adjust Your Set: These pictures were taken in October 1998 with a first generation digital camera. They are as big as they'll ever get.

Valley: Near the entrance to the park. Unlike much of the park, it is lush and green.
Watering Hole: Near the center of the park, this watering hole is more typical of the arid parkland. The picture shows a water buffalo and an antelope approaching to drink.
Zebra: Common in the park, Zebras seem the least shy of the animals. They are often found quite near roads. Eating seems to be the main activity of all park animals. This Zebra is on the move.

Monkey: In general, monkeys are problematic. When annoyed they will throw their own waste at cars. There's a story about a driver who, knowing monkeys don't like snakes, put several fake snakes on the hood of his car. This had the beneficial effect of distracting the monkeys who did not throw shit on the windshield. Instead, they threw rocks and sticks at the snakes. The windshield had to be replaced. The monkey in the picture was pretty docile.
