Volubilis
Going 30 km north from Meknès, we arrived shortly at Volubilis. This is a ruined roman city dating back to the around 100 AD. Built on an older site, it was the capital of Juba II of Mauretania. He was educated in the household of the Roman Emperor Augustus, married Cleopatra Silene, the daughter of Mark Anthony and Cleopatra and came to rule much of north Africa. Thus proving once again, "It's not what you know but who you know."
Volubilis is arguably the finest archeological site in Morocco. Sitting on a high flat plain, in an area with little rain, it is beautifully preserved. The best time to see it is early morning or late afternoon. The sun is low in the sky highlighting the ruins. And since there is essentially no shade here, you will escape the heat of the day.
The ground here is mostly clay. And since we visited on a rare rainy day, we ended walking out of the site with several pounds of wet sticky clay on our shoes.
