Marrakech
In the late 60's there was a wonderful Crosby, Stills & Nash song titled Marrakech Express. To me, at that time, Marrakech symbolized the exotic. I remember thinking then that I would never have the courage to go someplace so strange or so foreign.
Yet, here I am. And it is indeed strange. It is indeed foreign. But I feel comfortable here. I walk the streets or the Medina in confidence. We enter a restaurant and order lunch using a little French, a little Spanish and a little English. Not very articulate, but we didn't go away hungry, either.
Has Marrakech become that similar to other large cities? Was my concept of Marrakech symbolizing the exotic in error? Have I become more adaptable and less timid? I suppose all of these are true. Travel expands your world view. The reality is so much richer than the image.
Funny, but I catch myself humming Marrakech Express from time to time. This has been a great vacation.
