Quake Lake (officially Earthquake Lake) is a lake in southwestern Montana. It was created after an earthquake struck on August 17, 1959, killing 28 people. I was nine at the time and we could feel the earthquake 150 miles away in Billings. Today, Quake Lake is 190 feet deep and 6 miles long. US 287 follows the lake and offers glimpses of the effects of the earthquake and landslide, and a visitor center is just off the road. The memorial plaque is mounted to a boulder that came from the far side of the vally during the landslide.
No room at the inn in Virginia City a mile away. These primitive cabins are rustic on the outside and modern and charming inside. Recommended.
