On a recent visit to Maui, we discovered a town named Haiku. It inspired me to write a Haiku about Haiku.

On a recent trip to Hawaii, we did some diving off the coast of Maui. We’ve been diving for 25 years and Maui never disappoints. We obviously saw turtles and fish and urchins. We dove the wreck of the Carthaginian on two dives. During the dive we saw a submarine cruise by. Admittedly it wasn’t exactly the Nautilus, just a tourist sub ... but it was pretty cool nonetheless.
See more and high res photos at Digital Quixote.
On our last day of diving we took a boat to Molokai. At one point we turned our backs on the island and headed straight out to deep blue water. That’s where the sharks are!
All photos are by Nancy. i tried my hand at underwater photography and just don’t have the knack for it!

In January I was in Hawaii and had a chance to photograph windsurfers on the north shore of Maui. The surf was 10 to 20 feet and the wind in excess of 20 knots. This makes for pretty exciting windsurfing. I think you’d need to be at the top of your game to enjoy this!

On a recent trip to Hawaii, I had the chance to photograph surfers on 20-30 foot waves on the north shore of Maui. I’ve never surfed, and I suspect this would not be the best venue for a beginner. But it sure did temp me to learn how!

We took ourselves off to Mt Rainier again two weeks ago today. Hiking at Sunrise and a circumnavigation of “the mountain.” The photo above is from Reflection Lake, on the Paradise side of the mountain, looking back toward Mt Rainier.
To get to where I was standing, you follow a short boggy trail and stand in the middle of a mosquito storm. Set up the tripod (swat mosquitoes), adjust camera settings (swat mosquitoes), and take multiple bracketed shots (swatting mosquitoes).
As I was finishing, a couple came up, he carrying a Canon 1Ds-Mark III. He hands me his camera and says, “Will you take our picture with the mountain in the background.” Sure. Looking at my Nikon D3, he says, “Do you know how to use a Canon?” Sure, how hard can it be? They head off down the trail and a few minutes later stand on the little peninsula you can see in the photo. I snap about 5 shots. They head back and a few minutes later I hand him back his camera. That’s trust.
Check out the rest of my Rainier photos here.
The photo below was taken from the Sunrise side of the mountain.
