Short Takes

During my business travel, I usually carry my camera. Except as specifically noted, this section is dedicated to short subjects that I've photographed but where the subject matter isn't "deep enough" to warrant adding a country.

As always, you can click on an image to either expand it, or see more images from the same photo opportunity.

Making History Beautiful: I have never wanted to make history. Making history is about struggle, triumph, overcoming great adversity. In short, history is messy with plenty of mud, blood, and gore. In November 2006, we visited Colonial Williamsburg. It is one of the oldest new-world settlements in North America. The company "Colonial Williamsburg" is working to make this part of American history beautiful. And they are succeeding. Our visit over the thanksgiving holiday was punctuated by beautiful, clear, crisp, and sunny weather which showed off this historic site wonderfully. If you have been, and get the chance, a visit to Colonial Williamsburg is highly recommended.
B4 - 2006 Oyster Run: Twenty-five years ago, a few guys, who happened to be motorcycle enthusiasts, got together for a ride to Anacortes Washington to eat some oysters. Next year, they each invited some buddies and the group was larger. In the years that followed, buddies invited buddies and in a combinatorial explosion of motorcycle mania, their numbers grew to around 15,000-20,000 this year. Why B4? It's short for Bikes, Bikers, and Biker Babes!
I am a pilot, and an aviation enthusiast in general. Besides the left hand seat, there's no better place for an enthusiast than an air show. The EU's premier air show alternates between Paris and Farnborough ... every other year in Paris, and the other every other year in Farnborough, England. I was lucky to attend the Farnborough air show in July 2006. Here are the best of the 550 photos I took and the color commentary.
A friend and colleague who lives in UK has an exotic hobby he invited me to share. He owns an antique steam locomotive. Upon meeting my friend, I got a tour of the locomotive and the antique rail cars it would be puling that day. The next thing I knew we were boarding, and I was invited to make the first leg of the trip in the locomotive. Wow. Check out these photos from the trip.
SFMOMA-01.jpg (72170 bytes) On 15 June 2002, we were in San Francisco for the retirement celebration of a friend and had a morning to kill. We spent it at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). My idea of a good museum begins with content. My idea of a great museum ends with the concept that the museum is art itself. By those definitions, SFMOMA is both a good and a great museum. Click on the photo to the left and check it out.
CarryPorter-Low-28.jpg (18400 bytes) In early July 2000, my daughter climbed Washington State's Mount Rainier as a fund raiser for the American Lung Association. Click on the image at the left to check out her commentary and some pretty cool pictures.
Concorde.jpg (28789 bytes) Between 14 June and 27 June, 2000 I experienced the worst of all business travel ... 10 cities, on 3 continents, over 13 days. Worst of all, while trying to go from London to San Francisco, there was a complete failure of air traffic control in London. However, there was definitely a silver lining in this cloud!

After waiting 9 hours in the airport, I convinced British Airways to fly me to New York on the Concorde, after which I would catch a flight to San Francisco. This fulfilled a life long dream, to fly Concorde. Here are a few of the on-board photos I took at 57,500 feet traveling at 1,300 mph (mach 2.00).

On Saturday, 17 June, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen opened his Experience Music Project in Seattle. 2 parts museum, 3 parts tribute to Jimi Hendrix, and 9 parts interactive fun ... this is a great reason to visit Seattle. Here are 8 photos inside and out.

The building housing the museum is as interesting as the contents. It was designed by the same architect who designed the Gugenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. You may have seen the new Gugenheim in the recent James Bond movie, The World Is Not Enough.

Chicago.jpg (25312 bytes) Since I spend a lot of time on planes, I have had the opportunity to take some unusual pictures "from the air." Click on the image at the left for pictures of sunset at the north pole, the Rocky Mountains, Chicago at night ...
